Calvin Ruzicka
Defensive Coordinator

Calvin Ruzicka is in his first year at ETBU under head coach Brian Mayper and will lead the defensive charge. He brings knowledge from one of the top high school programs in Texas from Cedar Hill spending the last 17 years on their football staff becoming one of the dominant teams in 6A. Cedar Hill won Texas State Championships in 2006, 2013, 2014 and were state runners-up in 2012.

In his time at Cedar Hill, he has been a special teams coordinator, secondary coach, and freshmen head coach. In 2013, he was awarded the National Football Foundation 6A Assistant Coach of the Year award. He has helped over 250 student-athletes gain college scholarships while also serving as the campus academic coordinator. Helping in the community has also been a part of his job as the community relations coordinator. As a track coach, he has seen three regional team championships, was state runner-up in 2006, and coached a 4x100 relay team to second in state.

Prior to his time at Cedar Hill, he spent two years at Texas Christian Academy (Arlington, Texas) as head coach and Athletic Director, where he won a state championship in the Texas Christian Athletic League in 2000. He was 18-4 in two seasons while also winning the 1999 TCAL NW district championship.

He is a 1988 graduate of Texas State University with a Bachelor of Business Management and is married to Julie. They have two children; Darron and Mason, and two grandchildren; Caden and Brady.


Jason Bachtel
Offensive Coordinator

Stepping in to continue to lead a high potent offense is Jason Bachtel as he enters his first year on Brian Mayper's staff. He comes from North Forney High School and has spent over 14 years working with offenses from being a quarterbacks and running backs coach to an offensive coordinator.

Last year at North Forney, the offense averaged 53 points per game and finished 10-3 on the year making a run into the playoffs. He spent six years as the head coach and Athletic Director at Scurry-Rosser High School where he was the 2013 District 6 Coach of the Year guiding his team to a 12-1 record.

Bachtel has also been an assistant coach at Galena Park High School and Gatesville High School. He started his coaching career as a student assistant at Howard Payne University in 2002 as the running backs coach. In that year, HPU went 9-1 and finished ranked 17th in the AFCA national poll and 10th in the Football Gazette poll.

He is no stranger to the American Southwest Conference as a three-year letterman for Howard Payne University at quarterback. In those three years, HPU won 19 games as he finished his senior year at 8-2.

Graduating in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in History, he is currently working on a Master of Education in Educational Administration at Lamar University. He has been married to Tara for 16 years and has four children: Talen, Bailee, Brooklyn, and newborn Blaire.


Richard Embry
Defensive Line

Richard Embry is in his first season under Head Coach Brian Mayper and will lead the defensive line. Embry brings a wealth of knowledge in player development, maximizing student-athlete potential, as well as exceptional communication skills.

Embry has experience working with a variety of positions, including linebackers, tight ends and full backs. He also brings expertise in drafting game strategies and determining player positions. He served as the defensive coordinator and head track and field coach at Green Oaks Performing Arts High School in 2017 in Louisiana. He was also the defensive coordinator for A+ Academy High School in Dallas, Texas, from 2015-2016. During his tenure, he helped to lead the program to a championship in 2015. Embry also contributed to a Central States Conference Championship from 2014-2015 at Langston University (Okla.) working as the tight end and defensive end coach.
As a student-athlete, Embry gained several accolades on the field. In 2011, he was an All-Conference first-team selection as a linebacker in the Central States Football League while also being named the Central States Football League Defensive MVP in 2011. During his tenure at SAGU, he served as the defensive captain from 2010-2011. In high school, he was a four-year letter winner in both power lifting and football. He was also a first place All-Region Power Lifter and a 2007 football defensive MVP for his team. Prior to his playing time at SAGU, Embry won a conference championship at Navarro Junior College in 2007.
Embry has served his community through the years as a youth sponsor at Solid Rock Baptist Church in Paris, Texas. He was also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes during his time at SAGU. He has also spent time coaching at a football summer camp at Ennis High School teaching 3rd-8th grade position drills and techniques. 
Embry earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sports Management from Southwestern Assemblies of God University in 2012.
